Is This Who We Are? By HKG 3/30/20

Have you seen the reports on vehicles being stopped because the license plate says New York? Have you heard about police showing up at doors to find out where the person inside came from, states wanting to close their borders to those seeking safety, residents of ‘hot spots ‘ being told to stay where they are? Scroll through Facebook and see how many posts say “don’t come Upstate to my town, don’t come to your winter home down south, stay there, we don’t want you here”.

My God, is this who we’ve become? Believe me, I am ALL for requiring self quarantining once these poor people get where they feel safe, I’m all for being smart and not risking other people’s health while they try and save their lives. But who are WE to say don’t come here?

I guess my perspective is a little different. You see, my oldest son and my beautiful daughter-in-law live in the epicenter of this nightmare. As a Personal Banker and a Pharmacist, they are considered “essential workers”. My fiance’s youngest daughter and her fiance live in the epicenter of this nightmare and he is a Firefighter. My heart aches at the risk they are living every minute of their life right now. I would give everything I have, including my health and safety, for those kids to all be somewhere holed up sitting on a couch bored like so many other people are. But they can’t be. Believe me when I tell you, if they could come home, I would welcome them with open arms.

My youngest son is Army Reserves. I pray every single day that I don’t get a call from him saying “Mom, we are going to NYC or New Orleans, or wherever “. You see, I understand it’s his duty, I understand it could happen, and I understand if he’s called, he will go. But he’s my baby, and I want him here, not there. Can you tell me you believe that if he does have to answer that call, that when the job is done he should stay there, because my God, we don’t want him HERE. Is this what we’ve become?

“There but the grace of God”

It’s easy to sit in the relative safety of your home and make a judgment call on what you think is right. But consider how you would feel if you lived there…or if someone you loved more than your life did. Then think for a moment before you decide to share that opinion on your page, not knowing who will see it whose life is being impacted every second of every day.

“There but the grace of God”

Be safe, stay healthy, be compassionate, and be kind….we are all in this together ❤

You made me cry. You have an exceptional ability to put thoughts and ideas on paper. Thankyou for sharing. We just need to keep praying and trusting God. I appreciated the reminder that Christina is in NYC. Also that her boy friend is a fire fighter. Dad and I didn’t know that. We love you!!!!!!!!
